LHC sets aside death sentence in blasphemy case
LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday set aside the death sentence given to Tahir Asim, an imam (prayer leader) from Gujarat, on blasphemy charges. The allegation against the applicant was that he had used derogatory language against the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Asim was given death sentence in 2003 by the sessions court in Gujarat. Asim appeared before the LHC bench and submitted an affidavit stating that he was a true Muslim and had complete faith and regard for the holy prophet (pbuh). He said that the case was fabricated and the complainant had religious differences with him. The court set aside the death sentence, after hearing the arguments. Later, Asim was released from police custody. staff report
